Hoi An Ancient Town – A world cultural heritage site
Hoi An used to be an international trade center by sea on the east-west area from the 16th to 19th centuries. It was the busiest trading port in Dang Trong region of Vietnam. Merchant ships from Japan, China, Portugal, Spain, Holland, ect often landed for exchanging, purchasing commodities. Hoi An Ancient Town intactly preserves its original architectures including houses, assembly halls, pagodas, communal houses, temples, shrines, water wells, bridges, family chapels, wharves and markets ect. The narrow streets cross one another to form a chessboard town. This is regarded as a living museum for the structure and the urban lifestyle.
