My Son sanctuary – A world cultural heritage site
Located in Duy Phu Commune, Duy Xuyen District, Quang Nam Province, My Son Sanctuary is the complex of Champa tower-temples in a 02 km wide valley, surrounded by high mountains and separated from the outside world. The South of My Son Sanctuary is Mahapavata mountain (also named Hon Den, Chua mountain, and Cat's Tooth Mountain). The mountain also symbolizes the sacred peak of the Champa kingdom which closely related to the legendary story representing the world of spirits human beings.
About 20 km the West from Simhapura Citadel (Tra Kieu), My Son was there ligious and cultural center of the Champa Kingdom. During the 4th to 13rd centuries, many tower-templeswere continuously constructed and My Son has become the prosperous development of Champa civilization. Over 70 temples are a remarkable architectural ensemble and present a vivid picture of spiritual life and historical, cultural values. It is often compared with other historical sites in Southeast Asia, such as Angko (Combodia), Pagan (Myanma) and Borobudur (Indonesia).
Throughout its age-old history, My Son is regarded as a vivid museum, cultural treasure for an exceptional example of cultural interchange with the architectural art of the Champa towers. My Son Sanctuary is the convergence of different styles, including the ancient style of My son E1, the Hoa Lai, the Dong Duong, My Son A1, Ponaga, Binh Dinh styles, etc. Most of the temples at My Son were made of red brick and sandstone in its construction.
The My Son Sanctuary, an exceptional example of cultural interchange, is regarded as one of the foremost Hindu temple complexes with Indian civilization including religious beliefs, Hinduism gradually affirmed its role in the Champa society. My Son was the most significant religious and political capital of the Champa Kingdom.According to the archaeological evidence, the Champa people believe in a universal soul, My Son is home of the Hindu gods and hencegods as the main belief. Temples access to the universal space-time and based on conceiving a universal soul and deity.
On December 4th 2009, in Marrakesh (Morocco), My Son Sanctuary was recognized as a Word Cultural Heritage by UNESCO.
