Located in the low section of Thu Bon River, the World Biosphere Reserve of the Cham Island inherits a diverse and unique ecosystem of the estuary and coastal areas. This is an exceptional example for the connection between people and nature.  The Cham Islands - Hoi An Biosphere Reserve area has a total area of nearly 33,475 hectares divided into 3 functional areas: Core area - The Cham Islands Marine Protected Area with area of 11,560 hectares; Buffer zone - The Thu Bon river mouth comes from the sea to the mainland with area up to 20,350 hectares.Transition zone - Which the highlight is the Ancient Town of Hoi An, Cham Islands consists of 08 small islets altogether and has fishing villages and poetic beaches, stone and coral reefs, hundreds of millions species of tropical seafood. Also well-known for its abundant land flora and fauna, the Cham Islands are famous for being home to the precious Yen swallow.  On May 26th, 2009, Cham Island was recognized as Global Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO.
